It’s a relatively straightforward question but it would have to be one of the most common cod questions I hear asked?

What pound braid and leader do you run for cod?

While I was previously a fan of trialling different strengths of both braid and leader based on the cod conundrum in front of me, it took only one quick convo with cod-king Rod Mac to scrap that framework and ‘bulk up’.

“You are preparing yourself for failure if you go into a fight under gunned,” he quipped. While 99% of the fish you fight will be quickly KO’ed by 30lb braid and leader, the other 1% might have other ideas.

With that in mind I hastily upped the ante and now run 50lb braid and 60lb leader for ALL my cod fishing applications – deep-water spinnerbating, casting surface paddlers, trolling deep diving hardbdy’s etc.

The only alteration I make is upping the ante even further and going to 60lb braid and 80lb leader when I am chasing the biggest, baddest cod that stalk those sacred spots along the mighty Murray River.

Norb's was lucky to hold onto this beast on 10lb leader.
