The Jackall Pompadour surface paddler has been on the market in Australia for about a year now. In a short time, it has already carved some serious bow waves into the burgeoning Murray cod surface lure market.
TG was fortunate enough to get our hands on a few of Jackall pompadours prior to their release Down Under. After investing an exorbitant amount of time researching these lures on the internet, watching countless Japanese YouTube clips of huge bass monstering these lures off the top, we were keen to test them on some green.
With our anticipation levels red lining, we took to the river hell bent on taking these lures to their limits and raising a demon from the deep.
Features of the pompadour
The first thing we noticed with the pompadour is the foldable metal wings that snap shut when you casting, making accurate casts a breeze. One of the biggest bugbears we have with traditional surface lures is the propensity for the big cumbersome surface bibs to catch the wind on the cast and slice the lure like a amateur golfer out for a Sunday afternoon hack.
The second striking feature of the pompadour is the oscillating back fizzer that freely sways from side to side allowing for maximum fizz and top water disturbance. Very unique indeed!
These are two very distinctive and beneficial lure characteristics, when paired with its clicking rattle, which set the pompadour apart from any other paddler currently available on Australian tackle shop walls.
Once you get them wet you will notice a very tight, scurrying and clicking action as they bobble and burp across the surface. At 80mm long with needle sharp trebles, not only will they prove tremendous on cod but also I can see quite a few bass anglers licking their lips at the prospects of tossing them at some XOS wild bass.
If we had to pick a creature that they best imitate with their action and vibrations when they are on the top, it is hard to go past a fretting cicada.
The 22gm pompadour can be worked at both ultra slow speeds and even propped on the spot, while not being out of the game whizzed across the top at a brisk walking paced. Of the 5 cod we landed during the lures maiden voyage all but one was landed with a slow and methodic retrieve.
If you are a serious Murray cod, or bass angler for that matter, the new Jackall Pompadours with their retractable side-flapping bibs and unique fizzer are an absolute must have addition for your tacklebox.

Are you located in Australia?
This colour was designed for Australia specifically.

I would seriously recommend having these awesome surface lures in your tackle box! I have only recently bought one and over a few months and river trips, have already got some cracking fish! I’ve never had much luck with surface fishing but with these beauties, you cant go wrong!
